Cinema as a Medium of Mass Communication
Saturday Seminar - Report by Ashutosh Joshi, BJMC - II Yr.

The students of Hyderabad campus took the initiative of conducting seminars every Saturday to develop their public speaking skills, with the co-operation of the Centre Director and Dean. The topic for the first Seminar in this series - held on 21.08.04 was "Cinema as a Medium of Mass Communication".

Students from different schools took part in the seminar. The management showed its full support for the programme by inviting Mr. Senthil, a well known and reputed Cinematographer from the Telugu film industry. He was the Camera man for the national award winning film "Aithey." Faculty & Staff members also attended the seminar.

The participants for the seminar were from different schools, the first of them was Suraj Acharaya, a M. Sc Biotech student first semester who spoke on the role of movies, and human psychology. "One should make films for everyone and that it must be inspiring and motivating to one and all," were Suraj's exact word.

The next speaker on the dais was Rahul a third semester BA Film and video production student, he briefed the audience about what films were really about and concluded by relating films to fantasy. He literally defined what film making was all about by saying "Film making is nothing but visual story telling."

Sreeram Banda a third semester BJMC student spoke about the gender bias in the Hindi and Telugu film industry, highlighting about the social problems faced by the weaker sex in the industry.

Srinivas Ram a third semester MJMC student made the seminar more interesting by saying defining films as a transnational language, "films know no boundaries and can penetrate through any cast, creed and culture," he said. Another factorial point he made was that films represented the thinking and philosophies of the era it was made in giving examples from the films made in 50's and the present make of films.

The Centre Dean Mr. Sri Guha said that he was overwhelmed by the presentations made by the students, three out of four being none related to films. He also said that he was impressed to find students being so articulate. Mr. Senthil also said that he was enlightened to find about the different perspectives to look at a film, and said that he would like to return to more of these seminars. The Centre Director praised the students for giving different insights into the film industry and expected the tradition to be carried on every Saturday.

Mrs. Suryavathi, Faculty - SOUL proposed vote of thanks.
